TIP OF MONTH
Press seams away from bulk.
Do not open seams, for these reasons.
- You cannot stitch in the ditch with open seams.
- Your quilt will not last as long.
If you have a star with six points to reduce bulk use a thinner thread-like 80 wt. Just change 1 Thread usually in the bobbin.
• reduces bulk.
• makes the block lay flatter.
• makes seams line up better.
• the block will measure the correct size.
Be cautious with a scant 1⁄4.” By not having a true one-fourth” your quilt will not last as long.
Pre-wound bobbins are usually a poly blend. Blends behave like cotton thread.
Another tip is when making a block, do not cut all your fabric at once. Cut enough fabric to make one block and use this as a sample.
Not all block patterns are evaluated or tested, resulting in incorrect yardage given on the pattern. - NEW ENGLAND SHOP HOP

Refreshments provided by Teresa Bills, Judy Moro, and Betsy Garcia.
Thank You ladies.
BUSINESS REPORTS:
Secretary’s Report: voted on and approved
Treasurer’s Report: voted and approved
COMMUNITY QUILTS:
Trish is down to 3 quilts. She needs quilts in October and November timeframe. She sold 2 quilts at Farmer’s Market for a total of $65.00. Thank you, Trish.
Trish encouraged folks to take pre-made quilt kits.
TAG SALE TABLE:
The tag sale table works like this. There is a fabric bin to put money in. Items are displayed on a table; you take what you want and donate. It's that simple. Items on the table are always changing.
FRIENDS SEW:
Sandy H asked if we wanted to get together and sew. She is looking at Stockbridge Senior Center at Town Hall. It would be a Monday 10-12 sometime after Labor Day in September. So, we are calling it Friends Sew. The building I believe has been refurbished. They are trying to get more people in to use the facility.
More details to follow.
BOM:
Each month Martha gives us a new State Block to make. July's month is Vermont. Vermont state colors are yellow, green, and blue. You get to decide on 2 blocks - Leaf or Triangle shape block. You can do both.
TIP OF THE MONTH:
It is best to press your seams to one side vs opening seams up. When seams are pressed open, they tend to come apart while being quilted. Sometimes quilting designs are best when stitching in the ditch and there is nothing to grab onto. The seams tend to split and separate for the quilter. So please press seams to one side.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy, Secretary

Refreshments were provided by Catherine K, Janet P, and Sindy H. Thank You Ladies.
BUSINESS REPORTS:
Secretary’s Report: Voted and accepted. This report will now be emailed 1 week after the meeting to keep the website more current.
Treasurer’s Report: Read voted and accepted. Half of the dues collected in December were spent.
TAG SALE TABLE:
Items were donated for our Tag Sale Table. Members took what they wanted and donated. Thanks to all. We made $100.00.
CAMP TO BELONG:
Funny how things come full circle. Camp To Belong started in Mass, moved to Maine and now is back in Hinsdale MA. Camp to Belong is a one-week camp run by volunteers to reunite seventy-five siblings separated by Foster Care placements. Imagine having no memories of your siblings growing up! Join us for a fabulous fun-filled week while you provide brothers & sisters with childhood memories that will connect them forever. We have many veteran counselors returning August 17th - 24th at Camp Taconic in the Berkshires, the pillows we made will be going to this wonderful program. Thanks to all who made the pillows and put them together for us.
LEE FARMERS MARKET:
As part of fundraising, Trish will bring some children’s quilts with her to the farmers market to sell. Thank You Trish for doing this.
PHOTOGRAPHER Needed
Currently Sandy is taking photos of quilts. Anyone wishing to do the job please let Sandy know. Anyone needing labels for the donated quilts let Sandy know.
SHEFFIELD LIBRARY:
Discussion in the fall will need to take place regarding the library selling our children’s quilts if the public is interested. Forms will have to be filled out; the library takes 20% of sales. They have a display area in the front. This year the quilts were hung over the wooden house in the children’s area, along with a sign.
TIP OF THE MONTH:
When sewing on borders, binding, and backing, use your walking foot to prevent tucks, creases, and puckers, and wonkiness. Also, if you have a quilt with several rows use your walking foot. I can attest to this. At the Empire QuiltFest in April, the common comment from the judge was, to strive for less wonkiness in the border. Another Item was to cut the border to size before sewing it on. This saves a lot of frustration.
BOM:
MA State Block for May The website with directions is found on the screenshot below. Generations Quilt Patterns.com
The colors for the MA block are blue, cranberry, and green.
Next month in June is CT State Block. They do not have a state color, so green will be it.
Folks contact Martha Scott to find out where the directions are for this one.
There are a couple of different designs for each state. Not sure what design she chose.

BUSINESS REPORTS:

Treasurer’s Report: Voted and accepted.
GIFT CERTIFICATES:
Congrats to Connie for winning a gift certificate to Pumpkin Patch And Marsha for winning a gift certificate to Brookside Quilts Congratulations Ladies.
CHILDREN’S QUILTS:
Will now be separated from Community Quilts. This was done during covid.
It only happens once a year in April. Kids quilts are voted on by members, then arrangements are made with Sheffield Library to hang them for a month in the children's area.
COMMUNITY QUILTS:
Berkshire Dream Center is located on Grove St. They help adults and children with various services. Trish delivered a few quilts here along with nursing homes. She tries to vary the locations where quilts are given. If you know of any organization, please let Trish know, especially for adults. She keeps a few for fire victims.
As quilts come in Trish likes to give them out.
BOM:
Martha asked the group what kind of quilt blocks they would like to see.
She presented a State Block. She showed us a red/white Massachusetts block. Everyone loved the idea. We will concentrate on the New England States including NY and CT since they are our neighbors. In May we will receive directions for the Massachusetts block. Great idea Martha!
PROGRAM - MONTHLY TIP:
Catherine provided us with a monthly tip. You can use batting as a design wall. Use painter's tape to hold up the batting, when done, use batting in your quilt.
FUNDRAISING:
We discussed various ways to raise money for our guild. One idea was to bring quilts to the Farmer's Market. Trish checks the night before for weather conditions and is willing to bring some quilts to Lee Park near the police station to sell. Judy offered to help her.
Another idea was to have a tag sale Sandy H and Judy N will man the table.
Due to our constitution, we cannot have a 50/50 Raffle.
We are not registered as a nonprofit 501 3 C guild. This is very time-consuming record keeping, making sure the correct papers are filed and in order. So, we could not sell raffle tickets for a quilt to raise money.
Another idea was Children's Quilts that are hung, if someone wanted to buy it what would we ask? $50-$75 was a figure agreed on. Sheffield Library also has a wall for selling items. There is a form to fill out. We will need to discuss this at the next meeting.
Next Month's Refreshments are Catherine K, Janet P, Emily T

Respectfully submitted, Judy

Website – Adrienne Bortell is our website guru. Great Job as always.

Kitchen Use – Judy signed the form for Kitchen Use, however nothing in the kitchen could be used. It was determined Not to use the kitchen, Also Joan the Director advised we can no longer have our June picnic there. Food brought in must be pre-packaged. Toxic food is anything you. make at home. Judy will email Joan and get clarification. People suggested Sheffield Pavilion, and other areas.
Classic Quilters Hoop – If interested please contact Jocelyn McIntee at 631-365-1803. It is free.
Viking Sewing Machine – see Betsy Garcia. Machine comes with some feet, is 25 years old for $400.00 email [email protected]
Budget – This consumed most of the night. Joan at the senior center waived the fee for use of the building. However, the group voted on increasing our donation from $250.00 to $300.00.
The guest fee will now be $5.00 voted and accepted.
If you have any scraps of batting, save them, and give them to Mimi.
Other items – When a vote is needed such as changes to our budget need a quorum and two- thirds vote.
THE New England Quilt Museum in Lowell is $100.00 again we voted on renewing that membership which allows us four free tickets. For those who have never been its worth it. Quilts change all the time. They have rooms upstairs which house Quilters such as Timna Tarr from Hadley MA.
CAMP TO BELONG: Is in Maine. This camp allows siblings who might be separated in foster care to connect with one another. The most popular project the camp does is pillows. The pillows consist of 8.5”x 8.5” square of muslin center. It is framed with 2.5” wide strips and sewn to a 12.5” x 12.5” fabric back. We leave a 3.5” opening. The children will write messages or draw pictures with markers on the muslin to their sibling, the camper then stuffs the pillow and sews up the opening. Trish brought pillow kits in. You can also use your own fabric as long as the center is Muslin. Please have them back by Mays Meeting. Donna will pick them up in June and bring them to the camp.
Quilt sizes - Sandy H sent out an email for sizes they need for Community Quilts. This is also on our website.
Children’s thirty-two”-36” x 40”
